Of all the birds of prey, the owl is my favorite. The Great Horned Owl is one of the largest in North America...about the size of a Red-tailed Hawk. Both sexes are similar in colour, except that the females tend to be larger and more vividly marked. The fine detail in the feather pattern filled me with awe as I examined it closely and I must admit that it has been truly challenging to paint. As I painted this bird I wished many times over that I could have somehow shown it from all angles in order to convey its true beauty but that was not possible. This painting was commissioned by the owner of an American Aviation company who had, in the past, owned a falconry. I was fortunate in having a mounted (stuffed) female, that had died of natural causes, to use as my subject. Now I feel that I have given this beautiful bird new life by showing her once again flying through her natural habitat. She will be seen and appreciated by everyone who purchases a limited-edition print as well as by his or her friends and visitors to my website.
